Good Morning, Grizzlies! Today is Thursday, February 11, 2016. We are in the shop today. What are we doing? Today, Mr. Cruise is his here to help us out! He is helping us on the battery tester. We are working on a bunch of other things as well. We are also working on running he motor and filing down side panels. Why are we doing this, you may ask? We need to prepare for the race! We are improving and developing ways to improve our race strategies and our speed. We are seeking help for our battery tester because we have to be able to test batteries and see our voltage. We have to make sure our batteries are wired correctly. We have to be absolutely sure about the voltage, so we know what we have to improve. We have to know the reason why our speed is better or is falling. It is so important for us to make these improvements because we really want to try to do better this year. Trying is really important. Why are we running the motor? We are running the motor because we installed a new one, I believe. We improved it in some way. We have to make sure it runs fine and that is good to go. We really want to make sure that everything runs fine because like I said we want to do better this year. We just want another chance at doing better and if we try, then we may get it. I cannot wait unit the race because I think we can and will do better this race. We can’t wait to start racing! We can’t wait to see some familiar faces from last race. We hope you are looking forward to it too! Also, we have a Spirit Night coming up! The date is on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016. The time is from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We cannot wait to see some familiar faces and hopefully intrigue some people about our program. Maybe, some will want to join! That includes the younger kids too! There is a team for 5th graders for our school! They are doing so great! It’s so great seeing them get involved at such a young age. It will help them so much for their future. It is helping us so much for our future! Please try to come to the Spirit Night. We guaranteed you, it will be worth your time! Black History Month: Garrett Morgan was mostly known for inventing things and developing ideas for things we use today! He has created a hair straightening product, breathing device, and revamped a sewing machine. He is mostly known for creating the traffic light that controls on daily traffic and allows us to travel by car. He got the idea when he witnessed a car accident. He thought “How could I prevent this?” We are thankful to this thought! We still use the traffic light today, but it doesn’t stop car accidents. Car accidents still happen, but it helps us prevent a bunch of them from occurring. We are so thankful! Joke of the Day: Q: How did the telephone propose to his girlfriend? A: He gave her a ring! With more to come, Carlee from Green Grizzlies "If you can be the best, then why not try to be the best?" Garrett Morgan

Good morning, Grizzlies! Today is Wednesday, February 10th, 2016. ( I COULD NOT ACCESS THE BLOG YESTERDAY, BUT I STILL MADE A POST AND MADE A POST FOR TODAY TOO) I am reposting the same blog from because there is really nothing to add or change but the black history month figure, the joke, and date. I am terribly sorry. We are in the classroom today. I apologize for the blogs looking similar, we have been doing the same thing, so there is not much to add. We are also cutting out Spirit Night flyers. We have to cut them out and give them to all the homerooms, so they are notified about our Spirit Night. We love to see friendly faces. I think it’s great that we are having another Spirit Night. I can’t wait to see you guys! We are also doing research for Mr. Cruise for our battery testers. I don’t know much about that yet, but whenever I gather enough information, I will notify you guys. Also, we are making a new design for our car because we have to move it. It has been said by people in charge of the Greenpower that we have to have numbers on both side and our school name on there. That being said, we have to make more adjustments to our car. I hope that it goes smoothly and we take our time. We are working on practicing the presentation. We have been in the classroom practicing our presentation and working on discussing questions that might be asked by the judges. It is so important that we practice and I know I explain this in every blog, but it really is important that we practice. I think it’s really important because it allows us to be prepared and ready other than being scrambled and unprepared. The judges will see us as responsible and that’s what we really need. We have to remember that our team and our actions reflect upon our car and school. We do not want to make our school and car look bad. I think us practicing is great and it is great that we are discussing the questions as well. It would be bad for us and we would get nowhere. Therefore, let us be prepared for the presentation and be able to professionally answer questions that may or may not be asked. I think confidence is one thing that judges love to see other than preparedness. They like seeing the groups believe in themselves and work hard to produce a great outcome. I see a lot of confidence in Greenpower. Not only our team, but a lot of other teams have a lot of confidence and that’s really important. Many of the teams are very proud of the car and their process of making the car. I think that is really amazing how people build a strong confidence and present it to others around them. They create a reflection off of themselves towards their team, car, and school. We always want to be confident because we want to represent our school. We have a Spirit Night coming up! The date of the event is Tuesday, March 1st, 2016. It would be held from 5:00PM- 8:00PM. We hope everyone makes it to the Spirit Night. We love seeing everyone participate in events that raise money, not for us for local businesses that allow us to hold the event there. We are really lucky to be able to have a great place to hold the event and we are very thankful for that. We are also thankful for everyone that comes to our Spirit Nights. Some nights there are a lot of sport events going on. Not only with our school, but some our peers have a sibling that play for a sports team. We have a bigger chance to make more money for improvements to our car. We are really thankful for the money we have made so far. We are not just here for the money and I don’t want to get any misconception from anyone, but the important part is what we are making the money for. We aren’t all about money and winning. I think people over look us sometimes and think that because we are young that that’s all we want and it’s not. We want to succeed and take part in our future right now. We want to be prepared for our lives for the future, instead of getting nowhere in life. Therefore, the Spirit Nights are super important to us and the people that help us make money for improvements and support us. We really appreciate it! Keeping in mind, the race is coming up in April. We all know that dates come faster than they should and you should always be prepared for it. We aren’t procrastinating on any task that we need done. We are getting done what we need to get done and I think that is important. Like I have said before, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. It matters about how much effort you put into the work and what you did to TRY to win. If you at least attempt to reach your goals, you might make it. If you sit around, you aren’t going to make it anywhere. We have to make sure our car is 100 percent safe. By doing that, we have to take our time on improving things. If we don’t, we could end up hurt. We do not want to end up hurt. Another thing is that people are all worked up about winning. Although victory is a great feeling to feel, how is it beneficial to us? How does it make us better people? I think if you can be a good person when you “lose”, it shouldn’t matter if you win or lose the next time. If you’re a sore loser about something, you need to try harder the next time and be a better person about it. Winning and losing is not the important thing. Titles are important at all. I think that is where people get carried away with it. If you try your best, you will succeed. I guaranteed you that! Black History Month: Martin Luther King, Jr was known for giving his most famous “I have a dream” speech. He was known for trying to stop segregation. He led the Civil Rights movement from mid-50s until his death in 1968. He has his own holiday that people get out on, which is his birthday. I think that he is idolized a lot for his ways of trying to stop segregation. He spoke for many people. He created history and history you always remember. I think the past is different from history. You should never repeat history because what is done is done, but you never look back on your past. You can look back on history and think “wow that changed our society today.” You should always look forward to the present and future. The only thing that matters is the present and what you can do to prevent things from happening to yourself in the future. Joke of the day: Q: What did the caveman get his wife for Valentine’s Day? A: Ughs and kisses! With more to come, Carlee from Green Grizzlies “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” Martin Luther King, Jr Good morning, Grizzlies! Black History Month: Frederick Douglass was an African- American orator, social reformer, writer, and abolitionist. He was mostly known for being the first African- American that held a high government rank. He advised presidents and lecturing to thousands of people for things like, women’s rights and Irish Home rule. His exact year and birth are unknown, but he chose to celebrate it on what is now Valentine’s Day. He also published an autobiography called “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” in 1881 and revised it in 1892. He was known for his oratory, which is the dexterity of giving speeches. He showed great confidence and that’s a great example we can use for ourselves. It’s great to be confident and you should always try to be confident. You could change the world! Don’t cast yourself in the shadows. Come into the light and show who you are and what you want to be. All of the people in history did something to be known for. They are known for a specific event. You just might make history, so what do you want to be known for? Joke of the day: This one is an old joke, but it’s always great. It is a knock- knock joke! The best of all jokes! Knock- Knock. Who’s there? Olive. Olive who? Olive you! Her most known poem was “I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing”. She was born April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. She is idolized by many for her literacy skills to produce such inspiring poems. She was an author, poet, actress, screenwriter, and dancer. When Maya was younger, she was traumatized from a drastic event. Because of that, she stopped speaking. She also held the title as the first black woman cable car conductor, but only did that for a brief time. When she was 16, she gave birth to her son, Guy. She married a man named Anastasios Angelopoulos, where she developed her name she is iconic for. Martin Luther King, Jr was a close friend to her and was assassinated on her birthday. She stopped celebrating her birthdays for years. After suffering many health issues, she passed away May 28th, 2014 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She will always be remembered for her great poetry and literacy art. She is gone, but never will be forgotten. Joke of the day: Q: What did the whale say to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day? Like every other day this week (besides Monday), we have been in the classroom practicing our presentation and working on discussing questions that might be asked by the judges. It is so important that we practice and I know I explain this in every blog, but it really is important that we practice. Black History Month: Dr. Charles Drew was born on June 3rd, 1904 and died on April 1st, 1950. He was mostly known for using methods to create ways to process and storing blood plasma in blood banks. He directed the blood plasma programs in of United States and Great Britain in World War II, but resigned after he figured out that the blood of the African- Americans would be segregated. I think he was a great idol to the people in STEM. He was a Doctor/Surgeon. Without him, we wouldn’t have anywhere to get blood that we need when we lost too much blood. We are so thankful of him and his discoveries. Joke of the day: Q: What did the light bulb say to the other light bulb? A: I love you a watt! Come back Monday for another blog update! Today is Thursday, February 4th, 2016. Today, we are in the classroom. We are practicing our presentation and discussing questions. Again, its so important that we practice because the date of the presentation is coming up soon. Therefore, its very vital for us to practice as much as we can. Practice makes perfect. Practicing the questions help us focus on the fact that they will have questions about our presentation. I think we have the questions down. We do not know the exact questions they will ask, but they will at least ask questions. It's good to at least practice answering. More of our team needs to answer the questions. Especially, if they are part of the group that is mentioned in the question. We can work a bit more, but we have the answers for the questions. There is not much more to mention in today's blog. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: SPIRIT NIGHT ON MARCH 1ST, 2016. THE TIME WILL BE AT 5PM-8PM. Please try to attend our event! We love to see everyone enjoying themselves! Black History Month: Wilma Rudolph was mostly known for overcoming her disability. She was a track and field athlete. She was the first American to win 3 gold medals in a single Olympics game. She had to wear a brace on her left leg when she was young. By overcoming her disability, she became a gifted runner. She used hard work and physical therapy to overcome her weakness. Moral of the story is never give up on your dreams. If you want to do something , do it. You can overcome anything if you just try. Joke of the Day: Q: What do you call birds in love? A: Tweet-hearts! With more to come, Carlee from Green Grizzlies "Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday." Good morning, Grizzlies! Today is Wednesday, February 3rd,2016! We are in the classroom today. We are presenting and discussing extra jobs. In Greenpower, you have room for two things: jobs to fill and improvement. We always love improving to make something better. We always want to do our best and we will not stop what we are doing until we know we've done our best. I think the best thing about it is that we use teamwork to improve , so we go a lot faster and everything gets done. We know we need to our best and that's important. Also, our outreach leader, Lindsey, is currently not at school. We hope she gets better! Later this week, I think we are going to the shop. We have things we have to do in the shop. We have to wire somethings and run the motor. We also have to file down the panels. While we are down there, some people practice and some people make signs for our future Spirit Night. It's great we have a lot of people because we can get a lot things done since we have many people to do the tasks. Last year, we had about 9 people , so it was hard to get a bunch of things done while most of us have jobs to do. Next year, I hope we have a lot of people. Even though we have our car built for next year, we cannot predict the future of what happens after or before the race. Black History Month: Rosa Parks is most famously known for refusing to move seats for a white passenger on a bus. As we know, everything was different because black people didn't have rights. Rosa Parks decided to take a stand. Of course, she was arrested, but she risk everything to take a stand for who she was. As a black person, you had to give up your seat if a white passenger did not have one. When she took a stand, she began the spurring of boycott against segregation. She received many accolades during her life, including the NAACP's highest award. She will always be an important black history figure. Her birthday is also tomorrow! She will always be idolized by many, no matter what race. Joke of the Day: Q: What did the rabbit say to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day? A: Somebunny loves you! With more to come, Carlee from Green Grizzlies "Each person must live their life as a model for others." Rosa Parks Good Morning, Grizzlies! Today is Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016. We are in the classroom today. We are presenting again and discussing questions that the judges may or may not ask after our presentation. It's highly important we practice potential question that they judges may ask because we want to have answers for them and not just stand there. We want to be prepared for them! We want to have a good grade on our presentation. I think preparing for the questions is a great idea and we should practice it a lot more. I can't wait for us to race and present. We are going to do a great job. We have so much time to prepare and we all almost have our parts down too. Therefore, the more we practice, the more we will be prepared. If you have not been reading the blog update lately, we have an event coming up! We have a Spirit Night coming up! The date is Tuesday, March 1st , 2016. The time is 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The event is in 4 weeks, therefore, you have a lot of time to prepare for the date and clear your schedule. I believe that we will have a lot of people this time because their really isn't any school sports going on, other than track. Let's hope we get a lot of people to support our school and Greenpower team! We would highly appreciate it! Due to it being a important month, I will be writing a little bit about a person for Black History Month. Yesterday, I wrote a little about Langston Hughes and put a quote on there from him. Today, I am going to be talking about George Washington Carver. George Washington Carver was known for being an African- American scientist and inventor . He is best known for the use of the peanut in many of his inventions. Carver devised over 100 products using one of these crops, the peanut, including dyes, plastics and gasoline. From his work at Tuskegee, Carver developed approximately 300 products made from peanuts; these included: flour, paste, insulation, paper, wall board, wood stains, soap, shaving cream and skin lotion. He experimented with medicines made from peanuts, which included antiseptics, laxatives and a treatment for goiter. We still use one of the inventions for today, peanut butter! Joke of the Day: A woman was taking a nap on Valentine’s Day afternoon. After she awoke, she told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a gorgeous and expensive diamond necklace for Valentine’s Day! What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight,” he said. That evening, her husband came home with a small package for her. Thrilled, she opened it and found a book titled “The Meaning of Dreams.” With more to come, Carlee from Green Grizzlies "Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses."- George Washington Carver Good morning, Grizzlies! Today is Monday, February 1st, 2016! Not only is it the start of Black History Month, but it is the birthday of the famous Langston Hughes! We are in the shop today as well! We are working on what we did the last time I blogged. They are focusing on getting it fixed and continuously making great progress with the improvements. I think it's great that we are improving our car. There is always room for improvement! I can't wait to see what the outcome is of the improvement. I believe it will look and be absolutely great! Along with being in the shop, we are making posters for our Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night. We always make posters for the Spirit Nights because we put them out by both sides of the school to attract potential customers. I think we put them out on the day of the Spirit Night , so people will not forget! We have to make the font upon the posters visible to drivers in their cars. We want as many customers we can get! It would be great having a lot of people there to hear about what are program is about and how they can help us! You guys continuously help us , from donations to attending fundraisers, you guys are there! I think that's the greatest thing a devotee could do! You guys are great supporters for our team and school! We also have a team working on the power-point. They are going over the parts they are a bit off on, but are doing fantastic on. They are going over the parts because they want to have fluent speech, so they judges can hear their words perfecting. I believe that if they practice enough they will ace their part and have it covered!
